Action plan for the conservation of the brown bear population in Romania

Within the LIFE13 project NAT / RO / 001154 – CONSERVATION OF THE BROWN BEAR POPULATION IN ROMANIA (hereinafter referred to as LIFE FOR BEAR), it was elaborated the “Action Plan for the Conservation of the Brown Bear (Ursus arctos arctos) population in Romania” (hereinafter referred to as action plan).

This project is funded by the European Commission through the LIFE + Natura 2000 program and is implemented by the National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry “Marin Dracea” – Brasov Resort, (former ICAS), as coordinating beneficiary, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Carpathian Foundation, Bucegi Natural Park Administration, Kronstadt Local Forests Public Administration RA, Râşnov Forest District RA as associate beneficiaries.

In accordance with the provisions of O.U.G. 57/2007 regarding the regime of protected natural areas, conservation of natural habitats, of wild flora and fauna, art. 31, paragraph (4), in order to protect and conserve the brown bear species, the national action plan for the brown bear species “Action plan for the conservation of the brown bear population (Ursus arctos arctos) in Romania” was elaborated, a document containing measures for action and conservation, in accordance with the internationally agreed European brown bear action plans. The action plan went through four stages of consultation with specialists from institutes / institutions / entities / universities / non-governmental organizations, involved in the management, conservation and research of the brown bear species. The consultation stages resulted in a consolidated version of the action plan, where the needs of the species were harmonized from an ecological, ethological, conservative, economic and social point of view.

“The action plan for the conservation of the brown bear population (Ursus arctos arctos) in Romania” was approved by Ministerial Order 625 / 28.06.2018.
